Christian Foundations
The late R.C. Sproul writes in Essential Truths of the Christian Faith, “Every Christian is a theologian. We are always engaged in the activity of learning about the things of God. We are not all theologians in the professional or academic sense, but theologians we are, for better or for worse.” Sometimes we can think doctrine or theology is solely for the classroom and find ourselves thinking, “All I need to know is Jesus.” To that, Sproul asks, “Well, who is Jesus?” As soon as we begin answering that question, we’re doing theology! We’ve begun Christian Foundations at Monday School, looking at the gospel, the Bible, the Christian life, and the church. Why spend time on these subjects? Well, for exactly the reason outlined above. These are all theological topics, and theology is simply the study of God. The truths that bring us to faith in Christ are truths we need throughout the Christian life. These foundations matter for every Christian. Think about your own walk with the Lord and the different seasons you have gone through. New believers need to understand the faith they’ve embraced. Longtime believers need to keep deepening their understanding and learning to live in light of it. Years of attending church don’t automatically mean we can clearly explain what we believe. Our first class this past Monday looked at the gospel. There we looked at who God is, humanity and the problem of our sin, what Christ has accomplished, and our response of repentance and faith in what Christ has done. Timothy Keller gives good insight into the importance of understanding the gospel and its implications for the Christian life. In Center Church, he writes: “The gospel is not just the ABCs but the A to Z of the Christian life. It is inaccurate to think the gospel is what saves non-Christians, and then Christians mature by trying hard to live according to biblical principles. It is more accurate to say that we are saved by believing the gospel, and then we are transformed in every part of our minds, hearts, and lives by believing the gospel more and more deeply as life goes on (see Rom 12:1–2; Phil 1:6; 3:13–14).” The gospel continues to shape our confidence before God, our repentance, and our relationships. We need it as much today as we did on our first day following Jesus. These truths help us trust God in suffering, recognize error, resist temptation, and explain our hope to others. The aim is to know God and follow Him faithfully. So, in light of this, I would encourage you to ask yourself the question: “Could I explain the gospel clearly to someone else?” Go and revisit a passage such as 1 Corinthians 15:1–4 and discuss it with someone. You are welcome to come to Monday School next week as we look at the Bible and what it means to listen to God’s Word. In Colossians 2:6–7, we read, “Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” The challenge for us as believers is to continue walking in the Christ we have received, rooted and built up in Him. Opening the Bible Together
Last week, I encouraged us to consider a simple question: What would it look like if Christians throughout our church were regularly opening their Bibles together? Maybe you’ve thought of someone you could ask to do this with. But another question might be holding you back: What would we actually do when we sit down? You don’t need to prepare a lesson or have all the answers. You can open your Bibles, read a passage, and work through it together. A few simple questions can help guide the conversation. In our recent Monday School classes, we explored two approaches recommended in David Helm’s One-to-One Bible Reading: the Swedish Method and COMA. Both give us a starting point for reading carefully, understanding what God has said, and responding in faith and obedience. The Swedish Method Light Bulb → Question Mark → Arrow This approach uses three simple symbols to guide your reading: a light bulb, a question mark, and an arrow. Start by reading a passage aloud together. Then take a few minutes to read it again individually, noting something beside each symbol. A light bulb: What stands out? This should be something that 'shines' from the passage – whatever impacts you most, or draws your attention. A question mark: What don’t I understand? Anything that is difficult to understand in the text, or a question the reader would like to ask the writer of the passage or the Lord. You don’t have to hide your questions or pretend you understand everything. Bring them into the conversation and look carefully at the passage together. An arrow: How does this apply to me? Ask how you are to respond. Something in the passage that connects personally to your life. How does this passage call you to trust God, turn from sin, love someone, or change the way you think and live? After taking a few minutes individually, share what you’ve noticed. Keep returning to the passage as you talk. The aim is to understand and respond to what God has actually said. The COMA Method Context → Observation → Meaning → Application COMA provides four headings to guide your conversation: Context, Observation, Meaning, and Application. Context: Where does this passage fit? Consider what comes before and after it. Who is writing or speaking? Who is being addressed? Reading a few surrounding verses can help us avoid taking a statement out of context. Observation: What does the passage say? Look closely at what is there. Who is involved? What happens? Are there repeated words, commands, promises, or contrasts? Take time to notice the details. Meaning: What does the passage mean? What is the author communicating to the original readers? How do the details fit together? Try putting the main point into a sentence, checking that it reflects the passage. Application: How should we respond? Having considered its meaning, ask how this part of God’s Word should shape your beliefs, desires, words, and actions. Is there a promise to trust, a sin to confess, or an example to follow? Be specific, and pray for God’s help to respond. Give It a Try These methods are just a couple of ways to get you into God’s Word with someone else. So, choose whichever approach helps you get started. Ask God to help you understand His Word, read the passage, and use one of these methods to guide your conversation. Finish by praying about what you’ve learned. We still have copies of David Helm’s One-to-One Bible Reading available at the church if you would like more guidance. Remember, you don’t need to be an expert! Simply think of one person, arrange a time, and open the Bible together. Pastor Kevin

What's Happening Beside the Church?
We have been receiving lots of questions about the work being done on our neighbouring property. I thought I would share another update on that as well as some context. The first thing to know is that the majority of the lot next door to the church is not our property. The church membership voted to sell this portion of the property back in 2017. None of our current staff were in leadership at that time, but I am sure the decision to sell that land was a difficult one to make. Since this sale in 2018, our understanding is that the property has changed hands several times. It is now owned by developer, Crowne Pacific, and they have begun construction on what will be a 4 story, 44 unit apartment complex called, “Opus.” Once we knew this project was coming, we began conversations with the developer about how we could work together successfully during the construction phase of this project. SCC still owns a portion of the field, which in the past has been used for youth activities. However, the space we still own as a church is no longer large enough to accommodate our youth group. We want this field to be used for more than just mowing and an area for people’s pets. We are thrilled that we have found a use for this space that will be a win-win for both us and our new neighbours. We have made an agreement that the developer will do the work of turning our field into a gravel parking area at their expense. In return, they will have sole access to that lot during the construction phase of their project. Crowne Pacific will use this for trade parking and material storage. Adding parking was a part of our long-term planning needs and we are thankful that this goal can be accomplished in such a co-operative way. So…even though it looks like the whole field is turning into apartment buildings, that is not the case. As the project progresses, the two different uses will become more visible. We have also received some questions about why we let the grass die along the roads. That area was irrigated by a system that ran through the property that we sold, so when they began excavating that was the end of it. I am hopeful that we can improve that area and install a new irrigation system in the future, but it seems most prudent to wait until construction is completed. We also want to plan for our Youth Ministry to have all the room they need for any outdoor activities. Thankfully, SCC has secured a rental of the South Broadview School lower field for Tuesday and Thursday youth nights in exchange for the school using our parking lot to assist in their daily drop off and pick up traffic. SCC has been allowing parents to use that space for quite some time and we have a strong relationship with the school. We are grateful that the school was willing to provide the field for us now that we need the space! This will also provide significant savings in water usage, not to mention less mowing. Bonus: the school field is just about as close as our own field was. Win-win again! With all this equipment, there is a lot more activity around the property than we are used to. Please keep in mind that the entire construction area is completely off-limits at all times, including the section that the church owns. It would be a help if everyone could keep a lookout that no unauthorized people (i.e kids!) are entering the construction site, especially during youth drop-offs and Sunday mornings. Memory Verse Fun For The Whole Family Our Sunday Preschool and Kids Time program are in a lesson series called Kings & Prophets. The Memory Verse for this 6 lesson series is Psalm 46:10-11 NIV He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” 11 The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. On Sunday October 18th we learned actions for this Memory Verse and we thought we would share this with families so that you could participate in learning this verse together. Welcome to Children's Ministry 2026-2027
Fall is Here! A NEW CHILDREN’S MINISTRY YEAR HAS BEGUN! We have much to communicate through out the year! We are excited to have a way to stay connected with our SCC Families and anyone interested in learning more about what’s happening in Children’s Ministry! Click the button below.Subscribe Here A New Ministry Year has brought changes to our Preschool and Kids Time Programs. Our Preschool class has moved into our Children’s Ministry wing in our newly renovated space, joining the Kids Time Gr 1-4 Program on our lower level. We are grateful for our new classrooms! Having these programs together on one floor has allowed us to bring our Preschoolers and Gr 1-4 children together for worship and teaching time that provides an introduction to the lesson in age appropriate ways. This has been well received and going well! Along with new rooms and an adjusted structure, we have introduced Respectful Expectations with the children and their classroom teachers. We thought we should also introduce our families to these expectations and the purpose behind them. SCC Children’s Ministry aims to provide gospel centered age-appropriate teaching that helps build a solid foundation for children to: Know God, Love God and Follow God. Know God: because He has made Himself known. (Heb 1:1-3, Col 1:15) Love God: because He first loved us. (1John 3:1 & 4:10,19 / Romans 5:8) Follow God: because we are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works He has prepared in advance for us. (Eph 2:10, John 15:1-8) We endeavour to provide an environment conducive to helping every child Know God, Love God and Follow God and this is reflective in our classroom expectations. Respectful Expectations for Children: Listen to your leaders and follow instructions. Be kind to each other. Care for our classroom. Then we can…. HAVE FUN! Volunteer Expectations: SCC Kids Leaders will help all children under our guidance and care to understand and follow the Respectful Expectations with the intent being that nothing hinders them or others from learning and growing as a precious child of God. We love your children and are grateful for the opportunity we have to partner with you to raise up a new generation of Christ-followers. One of the ways you can partner with us is to review and remind your children of these Respectful Expectations so they are not surprised when we are putting them into practice. Thank you for helping us to care for every precious little soul that comes into our classrooms. LESSONS AND LEARNINGS: We have finished up our latest Lesson Series - Problems & Promises. Your Preschool or Kids Time age child(ren) should come home with a Promise Library Booklet. Within each week’s teaching content we highlighted a promise of God and a verse to hold on to. See Below. We hope this booklet is a treasured reminder to your child(ren) of God’s remarkable faithfulness - that we can count on God to keep His promises to us. God is trustworthy and He will do what He says He will do. We encourage you to talk about these promises with your children, help them look up the verses in the Bible and encourage them to go back to these truths when they are struggling or even use them as a spring board to prayer. Our new Series, KINGS & PROPHETS begins Sunday October 11th and runs until Sunday November 22nd. From a Volunteer: Serving in Children’s Ministries has been such a blessing! I feel more connected to the young families that are coming to church each week & also so grateful to be used by God to be part of discipling these little ones. Christian Foundations
The late R.C. Sproul writes in Essential Truths of the Christian Faith, “Every Christian is a theologian. We are always engaged in the activity of learning about the things of God. We are not all theologians in the professional or academic sense, but theologians we are, for better or for worse.” Sometimes we can think doctrine or theology is solely for the classroom and find ourselves thinking, “All I need to know is Jesus.” To that, Sproul asks, “Well, who is Jesus?” As soon as we begin answering that question, we’re doing theology! We’ve begun Christian Foundations at Monday School, looking at the gospel, the Bible, the Christian life, and the church. Why spend time on these subjects? Well, for exactly the reason outlined above. These are all theological topics, and theology is simply the study of God. The truths that bring us to faith in Christ are truths we need throughout the Christian life. These foundations matter for every Christian. Think about your own walk with the Lord and the different seasons you have gone through. New believers need to understand the faith they’ve embraced. Longtime believers need to keep deepening their understanding and learning to live in light of it. Years of attending church don’t automatically mean we can clearly explain what we believe. Our first class this past Monday looked at the gospel. There we looked at who God is, humanity and the problem of our sin, what Christ has accomplished, and our response of repentance and faith in what Christ has done. Timothy Keller gives good insight into the importance of understanding the gospel and its implications for the Christian life. In Center Church, he writes: “The gospel is not just the ABCs but the A to Z of the Christian life. It is inaccurate to think the gospel is what saves non-Christians, and then Christians mature by trying hard to live according to biblical principles. It is more accurate to say that we are saved by believing the gospel, and then we are transformed in every part of our minds, hearts, and lives by believing the gospel more and more deeply as life goes on (see Rom 12:1–2; Phil 1:6; 3:13–14).” The gospel continues to shape our confidence before God, our repentance, and our relationships. We need it as much today as we did on our first day following Jesus. These truths help us trust God in suffering, recognize error, resist temptation, and explain our hope to others. The aim is to know God and follow Him faithfully. So, in light of this, I would encourage you to ask yourself the question: “Could I explain the gospel clearly to someone else?” Go and revisit a passage such as 1 Corinthians 15:1–4 and discuss it with someone. You are welcome to come to Monday School next week as we look at the Bible and what it means to listen to God’s Word. In Colossians 2:6–7, we read, “Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” The challenge for us as believers is to continue walking in the Christ we have received, rooted and built up in Him. Opening the Bible Together
Last week, I encouraged us to consider a simple question: What would it look like if Christians throughout our church were regularly opening their Bibles together? Maybe you’ve thought of someone you could ask to do this with. But another question might be holding you back: What would we actually do when we sit down? You don’t need to prepare a lesson or have all the answers. You can open your Bibles, read a passage, and work through it together. A few simple questions can help guide the conversation. In our recent Monday School classes, we explored two approaches recommended in David Helm’s One-to-One Bible Reading: the Swedish Method and COMA. Both give us a starting point for reading carefully, understanding what God has said, and responding in faith and obedience. The Swedish Method Light Bulb → Question Mark → Arrow This approach uses three simple symbols to guide your reading: a light bulb, a question mark, and an arrow. Start by reading a passage aloud together. Then take a few minutes to read it again individually, noting something beside each symbol. A light bulb: What stands out? This should be something that 'shines' from the passage – whatever impacts you most, or draws your attention. A question mark: What don’t I understand? Anything that is difficult to understand in the text, or a question the reader would like to ask the writer of the passage or the Lord. You don’t have to hide your questions or pretend you understand everything. Bring them into the conversation and look carefully at the passage together. An arrow: How does this apply to me? Ask how you are to respond. Something in the passage that connects personally to your life. How does this passage call you to trust God, turn from sin, love someone, or change the way you think and live? After taking a few minutes individually, share what you’ve noticed. Keep returning to the passage as you talk. The aim is to understand and respond to what God has actually said. The COMA Method Context → Observation → Meaning → Application COMA provides four headings to guide your conversation: Context, Observation, Meaning, and Application. Context: Where does this passage fit? Consider what comes before and after it. Who is writing or speaking? Who is being addressed? Reading a few surrounding verses can help us avoid taking a statement out of context. Observation: What does the passage say? Look closely at what is there. Who is involved? What happens? Are there repeated words, commands, promises, or contrasts? Take time to notice the details. Meaning: What does the passage mean? What is the author communicating to the original readers? How do the details fit together? Try putting the main point into a sentence, checking that it reflects the passage. Application: How should we respond? Having considered its meaning, ask how this part of God’s Word should shape your beliefs, desires, words, and actions. Is there a promise to trust, a sin to confess, or an example to follow? Be specific, and pray for God’s help to respond. Give It a Try These methods are just a couple of ways to get you into God’s Word with someone else. So, choose whichever approach helps you get started. Ask God to help you understand His Word, read the passage, and use one of these methods to guide your conversation. Finish by praying about what you’ve learned. We still have copies of David Helm’s One-to-One Bible Reading available at the church if you would like more guidance. Growing Together in God's Word
What would it look like if Christians throughout our church were regularly opening their Bibles together? This is the broader question behind our recent Monday School class on One-to-One Bible Reading. There is much to be thankful for at SCC. We've talked about the church's mission to glorify God by making disciples, and we've recognized that every member has a role to play in that endeavour. We also have many ways to be involved in the life of the church. We gather every Sunday to read the Word, preach the Word, pray the Word, sing the Word, and see the Word (in the ordinances). We have children's and youth ministries aimed at helping the next generation know God, love God, and follow Him. We've launched discipleship groups to see people discipled and equipped to disciple others. We're gathering monthly to pray together as a church, and we have weekly classes to help us grow in our understanding of the faith. All of this is great. Praise the Lord! There are ways to go further in your walk with Jesus and places to serve Him on mission. But what about the ordinary, everyday opportunities we have to help one another follow Jesus? What about the conversations over coffee, the friendships that develop in our church, or the relationships we already have with fellow believers? What about your friends, neighbours, and coworkers who are yet to know Jesus? What if we began to see these relationships as opportunities to open God's Word together and encourage one another to grow as disciples of Jesus? Or even to introduce someone to Jesus for the very first time! We don't simply want a church where people attend ministries that help them grow. We want a church where people are actively helping one another grow. Remember our calling! Every Christian has a part to play in building up the body of Christ. Paul writes in Colossians 3:16, "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom." And in Ephesians 4:11–16, we're reminded that the work of ministry belongs to the whole church as each member does its part. We all have opportunities to encourage and build one another up through God's Word. One-to-One Bible Reading is a simple and accessible way to do just that. In his little book One-to-One Bible Reading, David Helm describes the practice as Christians intentionally meeting together to read and discuss a portion of Scripture over an agreed-upon period of time. In our recent Monday School class, we fleshed out what this looks like and introduced a couple of practical tools to help people get started. But at its core, it's simply inviting someone to walk through Scripture with you. You sit down together, pray, read the Bible, talk about what you've read, consider how it applies to your lives, and pray in light of what you've learned. Pray → Read → Talk → Apply → Pray That's it! You don't need to be a Bible scholar or have all the answers. You don't need a complicated curriculum or a new church program. You just need a Bible, another person, and a willingness to spend time together in God's Word. We can all do this, and what a benefit it would bring as we seek to become more like Jesus and help others do the same! So, who could you ask to read the Bible with you? Maybe it's someone in your discipleship group, a newer Christian you'd like to encourage, or a friend who doesn't yet know Jesus. Maybe you're the one who would benefit from having someone come alongside you to read Scripture together. I'd encourage you to prayerfully consider who you might invite. Start simply. Ask someone if they'd be willing to read a book of the Bible with you over the next few weeks. Find a time that works, open God's Word, and begin! And if you're unsure where to start, we'd be happy to help. We have copies of David Helm's One-to-One Bible Reading available at the church, along with some practical resources from our Monday School class we’d love to share. My prayer is that this would become an increasingly ordinary part of life at SCC—that we'd be a church where God's Word dwells richly among us, not only as we gather on Sundays, but as we open our Bibles together throughout the week, helping one another know, love, and follow Jesus. Board & Staff Strategic Ends
The following lays out the Strategic Ends of Shuswap Community Church as presented to the congregation in September 2026. Mission, Vision & Core Values A collaborative process led by the SCC staff to (re)define SCC's Mission, Vision, and Core Values will be finalized, presented and adopted by the board. (October 2026) These statements will be documented, visually designed, and ready for rollout to the congregation. (January 2027) Facility Short-term: A documented facility assessment that lists needed renovations and minor expansions, along with a project strategy, including timelines and cost estimates will be presented to the board for approval. (October 2026) Long-term: A documented 5-year facility master plan that includes options for major expansion, building projects or relocation will be presented to the board for approval. (November 2027) Organizational Structure Interim: In order to improve efficiency at SCC, an assessment of the current organizational structure will be conducted. An improved organizational structure will be developed which will include defined roles, reporting lines, and communication flow for all staff and key volunteers. A new organizational chart that outlines the new interim structure will be completed. (January 2027) Future: A strategy to bring SCC's leadership structure in alignment with a Biblical ecclesiology will be presented to the Board by February 2028 for discussion and approval. Full implementation of the new leadership structure, along with necessary SCC Bylaw changes and a refreshed organizational chart will be completed and presented at our AGM. (2030 SCC AGM) Discipleship Strategy A "Discipleship Pathway" to equip SCC members to become mature and multiplying disciples will be developed and presented to the board. The goal is to have clear options for every category for every generation in the calendar year. (September 2026) An annual "discipleship report" will be compiled by the ministry leaders and reported to the board. The report will help determine if programs are effective and accessible. (June 2027) Ministry Partnerships This audit will be a written report, presented to the board. The desire is to ensure fruitful partnerships that are aligned with the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of SCC. Current Partnerships: A report along with recommendations of all current ministry partnerships will be presented to the board. Partnerships will be evaluated against SCCs Mission, Vision, and Values, and a scorecard will be used to decide which partnerships to end, and which partnerships should be maintained. A strategy for strengthening partnerships will be part of the report and recommendations. (May 2027) Potential Partnerships: Research will be completed and a strategy developed for starting new partnerships that will allow SCC to strengthen its Mission, Vision, and Core Values. (May 2027) Communication Strategy A comprehensive communication strategy to promote a culture of trust throughout the whole of SCC will be developed and launched. This communication strategy will take into consideration the types of things needing to be communicated and the communication methods that will be employed for the delivery of the messaging. (May 2027)
